TMJ Release Massage
In this flow I release areas that are contributing to jaw pain, as well as the jaw itself. My approach with release of the TMJ itself is not a deep tissue experience. TMJ pain is a complex presentation with deep ties to long-standing clenching habits - this is a form of 'body bracing' that is seen when an individual carries a lot of stress. Instead - I work gently and in layers to release tension. The goal here is to create a grounded feeling of safety in the body to enable the body and face to relax. This generally includes the scalp, face, upper back, neck, and pecs (front of chest). Release of the jaw itself is mainly performed externally, with some conservative and gentle intra-oral TMJ work.
